Arrest made after cyclist dies at scene of A616 crash with lorry

A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention and driving while unfit through drink or drugs following the death of a cyclist in South Yorkshire. South Yorkshire Police[1] confirmed the HGV driver has been released on bail. It follows a collision on the A616 between a lorry and a 58-year-old man riding a bike near Langsett Reservoir just outside Sheffield[2].
Officers were called to the incident at 10.26am yesterday (Monday) morning. An air ambulance and emergency services all attended the incident, but when they arrived, they pronounced the cyclist dead at the scene. His family has been informed.
The force is now appealing for witnesses. It seeks dashcam footage or for anyone with information to come forward. The crash took place near the water treatment works next to the A616.
Many vehicles are understood to have driven past the incident. Dashcam footage can be submitted here[3], while information can be reported by calling 101 and quoting incident number 217 of April 7 2025. The road was cordoned off for the majority of April 7 as police investigated the scene.
It was reopened yesterday evening.
