Woman in critical condition after collision with lorry

The 51-year-old woman was hit by the vehicle while she was out walking on Welsh Street in Chepstow at around 7.30am. A 30-year-old man that was driving the lorry has been arrested on suspicion driving under the influence of drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Gwent Police have confirmed that he remains in custody at this time.

Welsh Street and the A466 closed for hours this morning while emergency services attended the collision. Locals saw police, fire service and critical care units at the scene. A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on Welsh Street, Chepstow, at around 7.30am on Monday 10 February.

"Officers attended, along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service, to assist with traffic management. "The collision involved a lorry and a pedestrian, and a 51-year-old woman was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries. "The driver of the lorry, a 30-year-old man from Sedbury, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He remains in custody at this time."
