West Yorkshire road to close for railway upgrade work

The A641 [1] Road / Northgate will close to both vehicles and pedestrians over some Sundays and full weekends between this month and May 2025. This is to enable workers to carry out [2] work in [3]. The road closures repeat closures that took place earlier this year[4] and last year.

While the road is closed, Transpennine Route Upgrade workers will continue work to strengthen Huddersfield viaduct, in preparation for installing new track. The road will close for twenty-four hours at 8 pm on Saturday, reopening at 8 pm on Sunday this coming weekend (Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 February), on the first four weekends in March, and again on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April.

The road will also close for a longer period - from 10pm on Friday evening until 5am on Monday morning on the remaining weekends in March and April and the first two weekends in May. Network Rail promises to set up signposted diversions along roads, which will give clear directions of the best routes to take.

Train services will also be disrupted in March[5] in connection with the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Station closure ahead

Later this year, Huddersfield station will close for thirty days, while workers carry out track and platform remodelling work. This remodelling forms part of wider work by the Transpennine Route Upgrade at Huddersfield station. This will include reconstructing the platforms, installing new track, restoring the canopy roof and building a new, accessible footbridge with lifts.

Work on these improvements is already underway. Network Rail promises that it will inform passengers using Huddersfield station well in advance of details of the closure and their options for alternative travel.

"We'd like to thank the local community in Huddersfield for their patience while we continue to complete important strengthening works to Huddersfield viaduct, which requires us to temporarily close the A641 Bradford Road / Northgate. "The work will enable the installation of new track over the viaduct to provide more capacity along the Transpennine route as part of TRU.

One complete, the scheme will allow faster, more reliable and frequent trains to run between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York."
