Live M23 traffic as multi-vehicle crash closes motorway near Gatwick Airport

There are severe delays on the M23[1] near Gatwick Airport[2] after a multi-vehicle crash closed all lanes on the motorway. The M23 Southbound is closed from J9 (Gatwick Airport) to J10 A264 Copthorne Way (Crawley) with queues forming down towards J8 (M25[3]). Some motorists[4] remain trapped in the closure and the road has been closed since around 10.10.

Surrey Police[5], Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service are working at the scene and teams from National Highways Traffic Officers are also assisting the emergency services with traffic management.

With disruption expected to continue for several hours a diversion route has been put in place, which is detailed below.
