Steps to Welshpool property left in ruins after lorry crashes into them

The steps to the Old Library building on Red Bank, Welshpool, were left in pieces after they were struck by a lorry travelling down the road at approximately 12pm on Friday, January 3. According to one local resident, the incident was reported to the police, while workers were on the scene later in the day to clear up the debris left from the entrance steps that had been smashed. Police confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident and that the road remained open throughout the clear up process, while the owner of the building had been made aware of the damage.

OTHER NEWS: One resident of the area who was in when the crash happened, said: "I heard the sound of the crash from my room and immediately ran out to see what had happened. "The lorry was parked right by the scene of where it had hit the stairs before moving a bit further down.

"I and someone else who lives nearby had both come out to see what was going on. After we realised what had happened we reported it to the police. "It was a Spar lorry that had clearly struck the steps and left them completely destroyed.

All I can say is that it's lucky it didn't hit the building itself, which it would have done if it crashed further down the lane. "But it's still managed to do plenty of damage." The front entrance to the building remains inaccessible and will require repairs, however the road remains passable to cars as the remains of the steps have been cleared away.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a single-vehicle road traffic collision at Red Bank, Welshpool at around 12.25pm this afternoon, Friday 3 January. "A lorry was reported to have collided with a property, causing damage to a metal fence. The owner of the property has been made aware of the damage.

No injuries were reported and the road remained open throughout."
