Driver cut free from overturned lorry after A-road crash

A lorry driver has been cut free from his cab after the vehicle overturned on a carriageway this morning (December 28). The incident happened on the A361 near Frome around 7am and the driver is receiving medical attention. Avon and Somerset Police were first on the scene and called Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue[1] Service who sent fire appliances from Frome, Warminster and Trowbridge.

The roof and windscreen of the lorry were removed to get access to the trapped driver. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service website states: "Fire control had a call from police requesting our attendance to a Road Traffic Collision involving a lorry that had overturned on the A361 near to Frome. "Control immediately mobilised fire appliances from Frome, Warminster and Trowbridge, a Heavy Rescue Vehicle and supporting appliance from Glastonbury and a supporting officer.

"Upon arrival, crews confirmed one lorry rolled over on the carriageway and the driver was still trapped. Crews were getting to work assessing the driver and organising equipment in preparation to extricate the driver." The posting added: "Crews confirmed one artic bulk lorry involved with the driver still within the vehicle.

Access has been made by removing the windscreen allowing the ambulance to assess the driver. "Due to limited space, ambulance have requested the roof of the lorry be removed for better working space and room for extrication. Crews are now at work with hydraulic rescue equipment to remove the roof.

"Crews have now extricated the driver from the lorry on a stretcher and now in the care of the ambulance service. Crews removed the windscreen for access and the roof for full extrication using small tools and hydraulic rescue cutting equipment. The incident will be left in the hands of the police."
