Delivery lorry crashes into historic pillar at Spa

A reversing delivery lorry has damaged one of the 18th century pillars at Thermae Bath Spa. During a delivery this morning, Wednesday, December 4, a lorry reversed into one of the six columns at the entrance of the spa, damaging the pillar. There are currently barriers and a cordon around the entrance while a pile of rubble and dust surrounds the pillar.

The pillar, which sits at the front of the entrance to the spa and supports the colonnade at the entrance, has been hit by the lorry and sustained damage. Thermae Bath Spa announced that it will remains closed to its customers. Posting to social media, it said that due to unforeseen circumstances the spa would be closed today.

The structural integrity of the column and building is not thought to be at risk, but the the spa has said the safety of its staff and customers are their first priority.

A spokesperson for Thermae Bath Spa has said: "This morning at 7:30am a delivery lorry unexpectedly reversed into one of the 18th century columns, being one of the six columns supporting the colonnade to the entrance of Thermae Bath Spa. "The safety of our customers and our staff is our first priority and therefore, regrettably, we have taken the decision to close whilst structural engineers and experts assess the damage to the column and advise when we can reopen."
