A55 Britannia Bridge update issued after ‘lorry crash’ sparked major delays

The Britannia Bridge has reopened fully after it was "struck" by a lorry yesterday (Thursday). The incident caused major delays on the A55[1] and impacted rail services. North Wales Police[2] said the westbound lane was closed at around 4.30pm after a road traffic collision on the link between Anglesey[3] and the mainland.

Earlier this morning, Traffic Wales said: "A temporary lane closure is in place eastbound, coming off Anglesey[4] onto the bridge. We aim to remove it later today. "Please allow extra time for additional congestion." As of around 9.30am, witnesses said the lane closure had been removed and traffic was now flowing freely.

Following yesterday's incident, images shared online appeared to show the lorry having struck one of the arches over the bridge, although a Traffic Wales picture seemed to show there was a gap between the truck and the tower arch. A Network Rail spokesperson said train services were stopped yesterday for around two hours, following the incident, but resumed around 6.05pm after inspections.
