Traffic chaos at Shrewsbury lorry crash site
However, kind-hearted Salopians have rallied to raise more than GBP3,000 for a family who lost everything[1] in the Bayston Hill crash[2], and a bit of positivity out of the “catastrophic” incident. A Chilton Bulk Transport lorry went into the Three Fishes pub and a building connected to Hong Kong City takeaway off the A49 at around 5.30am yesterday. The driver sustained a broken leg, while large parts of the brickwork on the buildings were demolished, leaving behind huge, gaping holes and a trail of destruction.
Nobody else was hurt.

This morning, there have been delays at the scene on the way towards the Dobbies roundabout. Temporary traffic lights have been put in place. The AA’s traffic monitoring website said at 9am today: “Partially blocked and very slow traffic due to emergency repairs on A49 Hereford Road both ways at Lyth Hill Road.”
Meanwhile, a fundraiser which was set up for the family who live next door to the pub and run the Chinese takeaway has received thousands of pounds of donations – dwarfing the initial target of GBP750. One donor, Jodi, said: “Hope this all helps in some way, glad you were all safe.” Janine and James, who also donated on the Just Giving page, said: “We were shocked to hear about this.
Our hearts go out to the family.” Another who contributed to the fundraiser, Phil B, said: “So glad that all your family got away without injury.” The page was set up by Chloe Broxton, who said: “The lorry hit the home and business of a family, while they slept in their beds, before plummeting into the side of The 3 Fishes pub.
“The house and Chinese takeaway (Hong Kong City) have been condemned, therefore this family has lost their home, as well as their business and income, which they use to independently support themselves and 4 children.
“This is a devastating and traumatic time for the family and I feel that some financial help during this time, while finances and insurances are being worked out would really be helpful for this family who have lost everything.”
