Everything we know about the M11 lorry fire causing 60-minute delays

A lorry fire on the M11[1] in Cambridgeshire has caused part of the road[2] to be closed with 60-minute delays on Friday morning (November 29). National Highways has shared a diversion route for motorists. The M11 northbound near Cambridge[3] has been closed since around 5.30am after a lorry fire.

The road closed between J11 at Harston and J12 at Barton Road. The latest from traffic monitoring site Inrix said: "M11 Northbound closed, severe delays due to lorry fire from J11 A10[4] Cambridge Road (Cambridge South / Harston) to J12 A603 Barton Road (Cambridge). Congestion to J10 (Duxford) and routes through Cambridge as traffic diverts.

Also slow southbound as onlookers slow to look." A Cambridgeshire[5] Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said crews from Sawston, Cottenham, Cambridge, Burwell, and Royston[6], along with a water carrier from Newmarket[7], had been called to the lorry fire at 5.33am. They said: "Wearing breathing apparatus firefighters used hose reels and small tools to extinguish the fire before returning to their stations by 7.50am.

The cause of the fire was accidental." Motorists should follow the diversion route signposted with a hollow circle symbol, as below:

  • Exit at J11 and at the roundabout take the first exit on to the A10.
  • Follow the A10 through Harston, Melbourn to Royston.
  • At the roundabout with the A505 take the third exit.
  • Head west on to the A505 to the next roundabout with the A1198.
  • Take the third exit on to the A1198.
  • Follow the A1189 through Kneesworth and Whaddon Gap.
  • At the roundabout with the A603 take the third exit.
  • Follow the A603 eastbound through New Wimpole and Barton to J12 of the M11.
  • At the first junction roundabout take the first exit to re-join the M11 northbound.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
