People are being warned to take ‘extreme precautions’ in the coming days if they are travelling to Spain. Large areas of Spain are bracing for the arrival of heavy rain and stormy weather[1] in the coming days, prompting a warning to be issued by Directorate General of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of the Interior.
Officials have warned of heavy rain in large parts of northeast Spain and the Balearic Islands this week, with the country’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) warning of an ‘important risk’ to areas along the eastern coast on Wednesday, September 18.
Yellow warnings for rain have also been issued in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia – reports Birmingham Live.[2] ?
A formation of low pressure is moving towards the northeast of the main land and towards the Balearics, which is causing increased instability. This will lead to showers and storms that may be occasionally strong, AEMET warned.
Weather experts have issued a series of recommendations to the public, with holidaymakers staying in the regions affected by heavy rain told to ‘take extreme precautions’ when driving.
Those that have to travel have been advised to stick to main roads and motorways, to slow down and not to stop in areas affected by fast-flowing water, reports Spanish news site Majorca Daily Bulletin. ?

On Thursday, significant parts of the mainland and the Balearics are expected to be hit by high humidity from the Mediterranean together with winds moving from the Atlantic, which could cause storms during the afternoon.
On Friday and Saturday, instability is expected to be concentrated mainly in the northern half of the mainland.
Spain’s weather agency has advised that there is great uncertainty about the forecast and has advised the public to stay informed of possible changes.
In the event of sudden storms and heavy rain, the public has been warned to be mindful where cars are parked as the rapid rise in water levels can damage cars parked on flood plains.
In the case of torrential rain, people should be aware of the risk of flooding and have been told not to cross flooded stretches with their vehicles or on foot.
Those staying in the countryside have been told to stay away from rivers, streams and low areas of hillsides and hills and to avoid crossing flooded fords.
