Video | Mercedes CLE 450 Cabriolet review – the best convertible yet?

At some point in the recent past, someone from Mercedes-Benz had an epiphany…”We sell far too many convertibles.” See, nobody actually NEEDs a convertible. It’s the very definition of an impractical lifestyle choice. Like buying leather trousers or a Gucci bum bag.

So the person at Mercedes said, “shouldn’t we just make, like, one convertible that does everything?” And here we have it. The Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet. In theory, it takes the best qualities of the C-Class, the E-Class and the S-Class convertibles and combines them; the sportiness of the C, the luxury of the S, and about the same size and price as the E.

That’s a lot to ask from one car though, right? Thankfully, it’s absolutely packed with tech to help make it the most luxurious convertible imaginable: an ‘Airscarf’ warms your neck with the roof down; an ‘Aircap’ makes the wind hit your bonce less hard; and ‘Airshorts’ assist with tanning your legs on the motorway. We made that last one up.

It does have Tik-Tok though. For some reason. More importantly, it also has a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo engine with 381 horsepower, which means 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and the sort of soundtrack you LOVE to hear in a car like this.

Alex takes you through the CLE in our video review, which you can watch by hitting play above.
