M1 traffic was stopped after lorry and car crash near J28 for Alfreton and Mansfield

Traffic was temporarily held on the M1[1] southbound due to an accident near junction 28 for Mansfield and Alfreton. At around 4.30pm this afternoon (Thursday, August 8), a collision involving a lorry and a car is understood to have taken place on the motorway[2]. There were five miles of congestion on the motorway, which caused delays of around 50 minutes during evening rush hour.

Emergency services were in attendance at the scene. Traffic monitoring site Inrix stated at the time: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to an accident, a lorry and a car involved on M1 Southbound between Tibshelf Services and J28 A38 (Alfreton / Mansfield). In the roadworks area.”

All lanes reopened at around 5.10pm and shortly before 6pm the traffic had returned to normal.
