Plans for new office and access facilities at Teesside’s Freeport have been approved by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. The move will see development start later this summer on a ten acre plot of land on the Freeport site and together with the new three-storey 24,596 sq ft office complex, additional car and HGV parking areas, security cabins, bus shelters, cycle sheds and landscaping will also be constructed. The design of the main office building complements other nearby offices and will feature similar construction materials.

The boundary of the port’s customs zone will run through the centre of the building and movement between both sections will be controlled via a purpose-built customs security checkpoint. The initiative is part of ongoing investment in the local transport infrastructure to better serve the growing number of vehicles using the rapidly expanding Freeport. It follows funding approved earlier this year by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority.

Neil Westwick, senior director at Lichfields’ Newcastle office, who has secured approval for the project from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, said it was a designated employment site and therefore development is required in association with the recently consented Freeport.

He added: “The Teesside Freeport is already in operation and the office is a necessary investment, designed to improve site operations and security and is in clear accordance with the development plan.

“It’s another big step forward in plans to create jobs, investment opportunities and prosperity for Teesside, driving forward the region’s position as a global centre of industrial excellence.”
