Pictures from the scene showed traffic at a standstill on the section of road between the M2 and the Harbledown junction for Canterbury city centre. An air ambulance could also been seen flying overhead and landing nearby.

At 8.45pm, National Highways said the road had now cleared and traffic was free to move, although there are some delays due to congestion.

A police spokesman said: “Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the A2 near Dunkirk.

“The road is closed in both directions between Brenley Corner and the A2050 at Harbledown while the incident is responded to.”
