Mother and child killed in horror road crash involving car and lorry in Mayo

A mother and her young daughter have died following a horror crash involving a lorry and a car that occurred in Mayo this evening. Emergency services remain at the scene of the incident at Lismoran on the N26 between Foxford and Swinford, where the two vehicles collided around 5.45pm. A woman aged in her 40s and her child were fatally injured in the incident, and their bodies remain at the scene, where a major operation is under way involving gardai, paramedics and units of the local fire brigade.

The driver of the lorry has been taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. The N26 linking Foxford and Swinford is closed pending a technical examination, and diversions are in place. Local Councillor John Caulfield told the Irish Mirror that the emerging news of two more road deaths in the county was "frightening" and "so, so sad".

"Our thoughts, the thoughts of the whole community are with the families involved at this time, and indeed with the driver of the other vehicle," he said. "That's three road deaths in Mayo in the past week alone. The roads are gone frightening, you only go where you have to go now, because it's gone so dangerous."

He remarked that the N26 between Foxford and Swinford was a busy road but would not have been regarded as particularly dangerous. "I can't recall an accident ever occurring there until now," said Mr Caulfield. A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana[3] appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. "Gardai[4] are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision that occurred in Lismoran, Foxford, County Mayo[5] this evening, Tuesday 2nd July 2024.

The collision, which involved a car and a lorry, occurred on the N26 at approximately 5.45pm. "The driver of the car, a female aged in her 40s, and a passenger of the car, a female child, were fatally injured in the collision. The bodies of the deceased remain at the scene," she said.

"The driver of the lorry was taken to hospital with injuries that are understood to be non-life threatening. "The scene of the collision on the N26 (Foxford to Swinford Road) is currently closed and local diversions are in place. A technical examination is being conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N26 between Swinford and Foxford between 5.00pm and 6.00pm on Tuesday evening are asked to make this footage available to Gardai." Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096 20560, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
