Lorry flips over after crashing into bridge on A30 in Cornwall
A lorry crashed into a rail bridge, flipping onto its side in Cornwall this afternoon, Wednesday, July 31. Pictures from the scene show the lorry on its side, wedged under the bridge. A number of emergency services were sent to the scene of the crash, on the B3274 around 1pm[1].
A number of rail services were cancelled, as trains were unable to cross the bridge until the damage had been assessed. An eyewitness said the lorry overturned by the Iron Bridge on the old stretch of the A30[2]. They said: “overturned lorry on the old A30 by the iron bridge”.
Great Western Railway warned its passengers of major disruption following the crash. It said: “Due to a lorry colliding with a bridge between Roche and St Columb Road, the line is blocked. Train services between Par and Newquay[3] may be cancelled or delayed.”
It is not thought that the driver was injured in the crash. It is not believed that any other vehicle was involved in the incident. It added that a lorry overturned after crashing into the bridge, and the damage had to be examined before planned train services could run.
GRW said: “The lorry driver is uninjured but the bridge requires an examination for any damage before we can run trains over it. Network Rail have specialist staff on site who are doing this.” Road and traffic monitoring site Inrix also warned of train disruption due to the crash.
It said rail services were suspended due to a vehicle hitting the bridge, adding: “B3274 in both directions blocked due to bridge struck by vehicle at Roche Cross.
Traffic is coping well”.
