Police warning as they issue Ainley Top lorry crash update

Police have issued a statement while an overturned lorry continues to cause traffic chaos on a busy Huddersfield[1] roundabout this morning. A dramatic picture has shown the lorry is on its side at[2] Ainley Top roundabout, appearing to have shed its load with bumper to bumper traffic blocking all exits of the roundabout. The incident occurred at about 6.34am today (Tuesday, May 21), blocking the carriageway and Halifax Road.

Traffic congestion has been building on all approaches to the roundabout ever since.

Roads have reopened for inbound traffic to Huddersfield but remain closed for outbound traffic from the town centre. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to the A629 at Ainley Top at about 6.34am to a report of an overturned lorry.

No injuries were reported and partner agencies attended to clear debris. "The roundabout has now re-opened for traffic inbound to Huddersfield, but remains closed for outbound traffic. Drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible while work to resolve the situation and re-open roads fully continues.

A Kirklees Council spokesperson said: "There has been a road traffic accident at Ainley Top roundabout this morning blocking the carriageway and Halifax Road. Emergency services are on-site and West Yorkshire Police are trying to get the left-hand lane open as soon as possible. Please avoid and use alternative routes."[4]

Data traffic site Inrix said: "A629 Halifax Road Northbound blocked, heavy traffic due to overturned lorry between Yew Tree Road and A643 Lindley Moor Road (Ainley Top Roundabout). "Ongoing since around 6.30am. The M62 westbound exit slip at J24 is also closed."
