M5 ‘drink driver’ in critical condition after two-car crash near Bristol

A driver in a critical condition in hospital following a serious crash on the M5 has been placed under arrest on suspicion of drink driving. Avon and Somerset Police[1] were called shortly before 10pm last night, Wednesday, May 29, to reports of a collision. The crash took place on the northbound carriageway of the M5 between junction 20 for Clevedon and junction 19 for Portishead[2]. Emergency services, including police and paramedics, arrived at the scene and closed the motorway.

Police said a man, 46, was arrested on suspicion of driving while above the alcohol limit[3]. He was taken to hospital and is in a critical but stable condition.

The M5 reopened shortly before midnight and investigating officers are now appealing for information on the crash.

They are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to get in touch. Avon and Somerset Police said: “We were called shortly before 10pm last night (29 May) following a report of a two-car collision on the M5 northbound between junctions 20 (Clevedon) and 19 (Portishead). “Officers attended, alongside the ambulance service, and closed the carriageway.

A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while above the alcohol limit and was taken to hospital and is in a critical but stable condition.

“The vehicles were recovered and the road was reopened shortly after midnight.
