A414 Writtle crash: Woman in her 80s dies after crash with lorry on major road

A pensioner has died after a serious crash between a car and lorry on the A414 today (May 1). Police are investigating the fatal crash which took place at 10am near Writtle. Police have closed off the road in both directions since the crash and have now confirmed that a woman in her 80s was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of the attending paramedics.

Police say the road closure is likely to remain in place for some time as investigations continue. Inspector Timothy Swain, from the Roads Policing Unit, said: "Very sadly we are now in a position to confirm this is a fatal collision. The family of the woman concerned have been informed and are being supported.

Our thoughts remain with them this afternoon.

"We remain on the scene of this serious collision as teams work to make the road safe and carry out enquiries. I appreciate the disruption this causes to road users, but it is vital we ensure our investigation is carried out properly and the scene made safe."
