Man who died in Plymouth A38 crash was driving instructor, inquest told

An inquest into the death of a man driving on the A38[1] has revealed he struck a stationary lorry, leaving him with fatal injuries. The hearing at Exeter coroner's court was recently held into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mark Bowden. Senior coroner Philip Spinney opened the inquest on April 4 and stated that Mr Bowden was born in Torquay and resided at an address in Pennycross Park Road, Plymouth.

At the time of his death on the morning of April 3[2] in Derriford Hospital[3], 51-year-old Mr Bowden was reported to be married and a driving instructor by occupation. Senior coroner Philip Spiney said: "The circumstances provided were that Mark drove into the back of a stationary lorry sustaining injuries which proved fatal. The incident is being investigated by police.

It has already been determined no prosecution is to take place." The hearing was adjourned and a full inquest will take place at a later date. PlymouthLive initially reported the collision on the evening of Wednesday March 27[4] which involved a blue Vauxhall Corsa and a MAN lorry on the westbound carriageway of the A38 at Deep Lane.

A large number of emergency services attended the scene and the road was partially closed for around five hours while an investigation was carried out at the scene. The road conditions at the time were dramatically hampered by high winds, rain and a sudden heavy snowstorm which blanketed parts of Plymouth, including Plymstock[5] and Plympton[6], as well as stretches of the A38. If you witnessed the incident or have any information or dashcam footage that could help with enquiries, please contact police via our website here[7] or by calling 101 quoting log 750 of 27 March.
