M23 closed near Gatwick with air ambulance in attendance

Air ambulance crews have just been on the scene of the four-car crash on the motorway near Gatwick Airport this morning. Traffic was stopped shortly before midday on the northbound carriageway and the southbound carriageway was also closed after the air ambulance arrived at the scene. A spokesman for National[1] Highways said: "The M23 is closed northbound between Junction 9 near London Gatwick Airport and Junction 8 near the M25 due to a collision.

"Surrey Police Traffic Officers are on scene." They confirmed that the southbound carriage had re-opened and that the air ambulance had left the scene. A diversion route has also been put in place.

Traffic queues are currently backing up for several miles due to the incident.

Surrey Police have been contacted for comment.
