M1 closed live updates as police-led incident shuts road in both directions between junction 20 and 21

Due to a police-led incident[1], the M1 was closed in both directions this evening.[2] The motorway was closed between junction 20 for Lutterworth and junction 21 for Leicester and the M69. The incident happened at around 8.30pm tonight (Monday, April 29). It is not clear what the incident was, but Highways East Midlands has confirmed details of the road closure.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, National Highways East Midlands stated: “The #M1[3] is closed in both directions between J20 #Lutterworth[4] and J21 ( #M69[5] ) for a police-led incident. More information to follow.” At around 9:20pm the northbound side of the motorway re-opened along with lane one of four on the southbound side.

The remaining three lanes then opened at around 9:40pm.
