Glasgow couple demented by loose manhole covers outside home say they can’t sleep at night

A Glasgow[1] couple have been struggling to go to sleep due to a loose manhole cover causing a 'racket' near their home. Dougie Robertson and his wife Roma have been calling for the manhole, located on Govan's[2] Shieldhall Road, to be fixed as it is disrupting their sleep. Although it can be frustrating during the day, when the nearby M8 is closed for roadworks at night the drain cover can cause a real headache for the pair as even more traffic is diverted past their home.

Despite contacting the local authority, the issue has yet to be resolved. Dougie told Glasgow Live : "We've got these manhole covers on Shieldhall Road which cause an absolute racket. "We have contacted the council on a number of occasions but nothing has been done yet.

There are few along the road but there is one just outside our house. "When a car goes over it you can hear a clunk which isn't so bad during the day but at night when they shut the motorway off and traffic is diverted past our house they all hit it. "You just can't go to sleep with it.

I drive trucks and it can be really dangerous when driving while deprived of sleep." The manhole has been causing havoc with their sleep for around four weeks. The couple have even thought about taking matters into their own hands and diverting traffic away from the annoyance.

Now they hope to see the stank fixed sooner rather than later. The frustrated resident said: "Once you are aware of it, that is when it bites into you. It's like a wobbly table in a restaurant; it is really annoying once you notice it.

"Someone needs to come out and sort it. We have only become really aware of the racket it causes in the last month. It's in an awkward position.

"I've thought about putting a cone on it, we've thought about parking a car on it. There's lots of things we've thought about doing. "The worst thing is we don't know who is responsible for the manhole covers."

Glasgow Live understand Scottish Water has painted a circle around the loose manhole cover, suggesting that it may be sorted in the near future.

Glasgow City Council has been contacted for comment.
