A342 crash: Man critically injured as ‘overtaking car hits lorry’

A man has been critically injured in a crash on the A342 in rural Wiltshire. Two air ambulance crews were scrambled to the road traffic collision close to Wilsford, near Devizes, at around 7am this morning (Wednesday). The incident involved a black Volkswagen Golf, a Grist Environmental-branded skip loader and an Earthline-branded Scania lorry.

It's understood the Golf was overtaking the Scania lorry when it struck the skip loader head-on. The three occupants of the Golf, all men aged in their 20s from the Southampton area, sustained serious injuries in the crash.

One man suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by Great Western Air Ambulance, where he remains in a critical condition. Another man suffered life-changing injuries, whilst the third was seriously hurt. The drivers of the lorries involved were uninjured.

A forensic collision investigation is being carried out by specially-trained officers. The road, between Chirton and Rushall, remains closed at the time of publication.

It is unlikely to reopen for several more hours. Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have dash cam are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 30 of today's date (20 March).
