The lost railway lines and train stations of Hull – then and now

The old Hornsea and Withernsea lines closed to passengers 60 years ago following the Beeching cuts

It was once possible to catch a train at small stations dotted around various neighbourhoods in Hull. Sadly for those who dream of an alternative to rush-hour gridlock, all are now lost.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the closure of the Hornsea[1] and Withernsea[2] lines to passengers as a result of the Beeching cuts, which decimated many services around the country. Also long gone are many of the lines that carried goods to and from the docks.

Today, the once-extensive railway network has all but vanished, but there are still traces of it to be seen here and there if you look hard enough. A few old stations are still standing along with overgrown platforms, boundary walls and even the odd goods yard.
