Mum praises hero McDonald’s lorry driver who pulled son from burning car after Bellshill crash

A loving mum has made it her mission to find the McDonald's lorry driver who pulled her son from his burning car after a horror[1] crash in Bellshill on Wednesday morning.

Lee Lawrence was stopping off at the fast food restaurant after finishing his work at Footasylum in the Fort shopping centre in the early hours of Valentine's Day, February 14.

On his way back home Lee came off at the Bellshill Bypass slip road towards the Righead Industrial Estate roundabout, his vehicle struck some black ice and the 23-year-old lost control of the car.

The Audi smashed into the bricked side of the roundabout before flying through the air and landing on its roof. The Uddingston man was left dangling upside down as flames erupted from the vehicle.

A mystery McDonald's lorry driver sprinted to rescue Lee from the car blaze. The 23-year-old's mum, Bobbie, is now hoping to thank the man for saving her boy.

She told Glasgow Live: "He was coming home from work and he was hungry so he told us he was going to head to McDonalds.

"He was on his way back and he came off the dual carriageway toward the roundabout. My son is a very responsible driver.

"He came off the slip road to the roundabout and as he turned his wheel to go round the car kept going straight ahead. The front of the car struck the roundabout and it started flipping before landing on its roof.

"Lee told me he was doing 20mph then the next thing he was flying through the air.

"He was trying to get out and find his phone whilst dangling upside down. He couldn't get out and he saw flames.

"He phoned his partner and that's when he saw the lorry driver. The man stopped the lorry ran over and got the door open.

"They got the seatbelt off and got him out."

The truly traumatic incident, and the thought of almost losing her child, hasn't quite sunk in for the mother from Saltcoats.

Bobbie added: "I was still shaking last night, I couldn't eat.

"That man pulled my boy out that car. If he had not been there, nobody would have been able to phone the emergency services.

"If it wasn't for him I would be away seeing my boy lying god knows where. It doesn't bear thinking of.

"We are so lucky that the man was there."

Although she is desperate to make sure the McDonald's lorry driver knows how thankful Lee's family are for his heroic efforts, Bobbie believes she'd be left speechless if she met the man face to face

The Saltcoats woman explained: "I don't know what I'd say to him. I will never be able to thank him enough.

"He saved Lee and the family from absolute devastation. I'll be forever in debt to that man for getting my boy out of there.

"I don't need to meet this man but I need him to know how grateful I am for what he done for us"

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 12.25am on Wednesday, 14 February, 2024, we received a report of a crash involving a car on Righead Industrial Estate, Bellshill."
