‘Enchanting’ Outlander filming location near Glasgow that Caitriona Balfe ‘drank’ from up for sale

Outlander[1] fans have been offered a unique chance to own a stunning Scottish landmark where the time-travelling drama was filmed. The Devil’s Pulpit is located just 15 miles outside Glasgow[2] and played a key role in a scene from the first series.

The “enchanting” site is located in Finnich Glen and stood in for the fictional St Ninian’s Spring, also known as Liar’s Spring. In one scene, Claire, played by Caitriona Balfe[3], was asked to drink from its waters to prove her trustworthiness.

The 23-acre site is now being marketed by Graham + Sibbald, with planning permission in place for a visitor centre, restaurant, café, shop and events area, as well as a car park for 150 vehicles. The plans have an expected investment of £2.7 million with the expectation it could attract 350,000 visitors a year with 70,000 already heading there every 12 months.

The Devil’s Pulpit is located between Glasgow and Loch Lomond[4] and Trossachs National Park, just south of Drymen in the Stirling[5] council area. The sandstone base gives the water its red colour while the pulpit itself is a a circular rock that rises from the Carnock Burn.

The area is a favourite with travellers keen to experience its beauty and has been linked to witches, druids and, of course, the devil himself. On TripAdvisor[8], one visitor said: “I had the most enchanting experience at Devil’s Pulpit during an early morning dip with friends. The serenity of this place is truly otherworldly. The moment I arrived, I was captivated by the mystical atmosphere created by the surrounding lush greenery and the whispering waters of the river.”

David Young, owner of the land, said: “There is an opportunity here at Finnich Glen to create a visitor attraction of national importance. It is indeed a beautiful Scottish landmark that is visited by people from all around the world – it has been previously referred to as Scotland’s Grand Canyon in miniature.”
