‘Weak’ bridge closed ‘immediately’ after routine inspection

A weak bridge was closed “immediately” after a routine inspection deemed it needed repairs and was “weak”.

Liverpool City Council posted on social media on Tuesday, January 9, to warn people hoping to travel through the Dingle area that Caryl Street, the road behind Brunswick train station, would be closed. This follows a routine inspection on a bridge owned by Network Rail.

According to the council, the inspection deemed the bridge to be “weak” and the road was immediately closed between Park Street and Princeton Place.

In an update on social media platform, X, the council said: “Following an inspection, a bridge owned by Network Rail on Caryl Street, in Dingle has been deemed “weak” and the street has been immediately closed. Diversions are in place from Park Street to Princeton Place.

“Updates will follow pending further assessments.”

Network Rail said they were carrying out a routine inspection when they found the bridge needed repairs, but have insisted the closure of the road is a “precautionary measure”. They added they were working with the council to place a temporary restriction of three tonnes on the bridge until the work is completed.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “We carried out a routine inspection of a railway bridge in Caryl Street which found it needed some repairs. As a precautionary measure, we are working with Liverpool City Council to place a temporary restriction of 3 tonnes on this bridge while we can arrange for the repairs to take place.

“The bridge is currently closed until we can arrange the restriction and the correct signs to be displayed.”

Merseyrail[3] has said the closure of the road is not affecting the Caryl Street entrance to Brunswick station.
