Train out of action after being damaged in collision near Lincoln

A train travelling through Lincolnshire[1] was damaged in a collision on an early morning journey, a new report reveals. The train collided with parts of a road-rail vehicle access point, near the Highdyke Junction by Lincoln[2], at around 6.30am on Tuesday, December 19 2023.

No one was injured as a result of the collision and the train was not derailed. According to a report issued by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, the train[3] sustained damage to equipment on the underside of the vehicle, which meant that it was unable to continue operation.

The temporary access point had been used the previous night as part of an inspection of overhead power lines. Investigators have since undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The aim was to establish enough of an understanding of what happened to determine whether a full investigation was worth conducting. A safety digest will instead be produced in the coming weeks, with a view to preventing similar accidents from happening again.

The branch published six safety digests in 2023, following incidents that involved near-misses and speeding trains. Among them was a report into a passenger being dragged along at a tramstop in Beeston, over in sister county Nottinghamshire.
