Traffic stopped in both directionson M20 due to lorry fire – as it happened
There were long delays on the M20[1] this afternoon (January 5) because of a crane lorry fire. It happened between Junction 1 for the M25 and Junction 2 for the A20.
Traffic was temporarily held in both directions as a result. It was subsequently released at 2.20pm but National Highways continued to advise drivers in the area to “expect delays” for a long while after.
At around 2.30pm, a spokesperson said: “Traffic has now been released on the M20 in both directions between J1 (M25) and J2 (A20) following a vehicle fire. Lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) remain closed eastbound while Kent Fire and Rescue Service remain working at scene. Delays have increased to 30 minutes on approach.”
It wasn’t until 5.15pm until traffic was said to be “coping well” following the earlier blaze. At that time, traffic monitoring website Inrix said: “Lane one (of three) remains closed for recovery and clean up. Traffic is coping well.”
The clear-up operation took place until after 9pm. See our live blog below for the latest updates on this as they happened.
