Rail renewals, upgrades and projects delivered successfully over Christmas across Anglia.

Region & Route:
Eastern: Anglia[1]

We’re thanking all our customers and passengers for their understanding and patience over the festive period while our engineers completed an extensive set of railway engineering work across the Anglia region to benefit passenger and freight services.

Major station construction programmes, track renewals, overhead line renewals, bridge demolitions and planned maintenance were completed successfully, despite poor weather conditions over the festive period. We also completed critical station work projects at Cambridge South and Beaulieu Park, connecting and completing new sections of mainline track to allow the station construction to continue safely into 2024.

The following work was completed:

  • At Cambridge South, a new track alignment was brought into operation allowing train services to be diverted around an area of construction of the station platforms.
  • The Cambridge resignalling team installed signal gantries, and associated signalling equipment between Cambridge and Ely as part of a larger programme of investment.
  • At Beaulieu Park station, new track was brought into use to allow trains to divert around the area of construction for new platforms while the new station building work continued.
  • We replaced track points (moveable sections of track which allow trains to switch between lines) and made adjustments to the overhead line equipment at Barking to improve reliability.
  • We installed 1000 metres of new overhead wire at Stratford, completing all overhead wire renewals in this location and also renewed a set of track points at Stratford to improve reliability.
  • We demolished the Kingsbury Road bridge which had come to the end of its useful life. We are planning to install a new structure on the weekend of 27 and 28 January and reopen the bridge by summer 2024.
  • We renewed around 300 metres of rail and 392 baseplates in the tunnel at Ipswich as well as clearing out the gullys and gutters to maintain drainage.
  • We completed general maintenance work across the network to take advantage of existing closures of the railway by undertaking surveys, inspections and repairs.

Katie Frost, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia said: “Months of rigorous preparation for the engineering work over Christmas has been successfully delivered as planned and the railway reopened on schedule to passenger and freight services.

“Thank you to all our customers and passengers for your patience and understanding while we delivered a lot of work to maintain and improve the railway across Anglia.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain’s railway infrastructure; that’s 20,000 miles of track[9], 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts[10] and the thousands of signals[11], level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK’s largest stations[12] while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country’s train operating companies[13].

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain’s railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway[14], so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan[15], to grow and expand the nation’s railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced – a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
