Man arrested after car crashes into traffic lights during police chase

A man has been arrested after a car crashed during a police chase.

Images from the scene show traffic lights at Switch Island damaged in the incident which also left two people in hospital. Merseyside Police[1] were called to reports a Ford Kuga was stolen outside a house in Kirkby[2] at around 1.30am on Tuesday, January 2.

The car was then spotted in the Long Lane, Aintree area. Officers carried out a pursuit of the car which then crashed into traffic lights on the A59 on the approach to Switch Island at Maghull.[3][4][5]

Two people inside the car, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital. Police have confirmed their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Officers have now revealed that a 29-year-old man, from Kirkby, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and theft. He has been released from hospital and remains in police custody. A woman who was taken to hospital has been released.
