A2 lorry fire closed motorway for 10 hours – as it happened
A lorry fire and diesel spill on the A2 caused a key section of the busy road to close on Monday (January 8). The incident took place on the eastbound carriageway between the M25 junction 2 for Dartford[1] and the B255 for Bean, forcing the carriageway to close.
Meanwhile, the westbound carriageway had also been closed for a time while the fire was extinguished. Heavy traffic had built in both directions on approach, with National Highways reporting two miles of congestion eastbound and four miles westbound.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service successfully extinguished the blaze and confirmed that there were no injuries as a result of the fire. The westbound carriageway was soon re-opened after the fire was brought under control, however the eastbound carriageway remained shut throughout the day due to the large spill.
A spokesperson for National Highways said at the time: “Recovery of the vehicle is ongoing and the closure is likely to be in place for some time. Once recovery is completed the road surface will be assessed for damage and whether resurfacing is required.”
A diversion was implemented for road-users to follow as the A2 remained shut throughout the afternoon. National Highways confirmed that all lanes of the A2 had been re-opened shortly after 7pm.
