Full list of transport plans sets out proposed direction of travel for road and rail users

Radical transport plans announced for the Tees Valley include spending millions on road and rail links as well as a tram service in five town centres.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen announced the vision for travel across the patch[1] which also include spending millions on rail links and £5m towards a rail devolution proposition. The package would be delivered using £1bn in funding secured after the scrapping of the northern leg of the HS2 rail line.

The TVCA Cabinet will make a decision on the proposals later this month. For the full list of plans, see below.

  • Rail proposals

    Development of a business case for electrification of the rail network from Northallerton to Saltburn to extend electric trains on the East Coast Main Line and Transpennine Line to the Teesside Valley – £3m[4]

    Feasibility study for infrastructure improvements for services between Middlesbrough to Nunthorpe– £1m[5][6]

    Overhaul of South Bank Railway station to improve and a park and ride facility – £40m[7]

    Develop a rail devolution proposal to gain more control over services – £5m

    Deliver a third platform at Middlesbrough Station at a faster pace – £40m

    Feasibility study to examine the removal of West Dyke level crossing at Redcar, looking at alternatives including a bridge a West Dyke Road – £1m[8]

    Study to investigate reinstatement of Saltburn to Boulby line for passengers – £1m

    Further development work into infrastructure upgrades for direct rail services between Darlington and Hartlepool – £40m[9][10]

    Exploring clearance work on the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe line to improve freight access – £35m[11]

    A new bus and railway station at Teesside Park, with works at Thornaby station and Tees Marshalling Yards transport interchange – £150m[12]

    Overhaul of Teesside Airport railway station – £20m[13]

    Highways and buses

    Delivery of 15 trackless trams, three in each of the town centres of Middlesbrough, Redcar, Stockton, Hartlepool and Darlington and autonomous shuttle services for Teesworks and Teesside International Airport – £20m[18]

    Delivery of digital technology package for the Tees Valley transport network – £60m

    Middlesbrough Bus Station redevelopment – £15m

    Development of new scheme providing subsidised access to cars for workers – £10m

    Improvements on the Middlesbrough Council-owned section of the A66 to include carriageway resurfacing, remediation work on bridges and structures – £20m[19]

    Improvements to roundabout junctions on the A66 between Middlesbrough, Teesport and Redcar including a new “through-about” link through the Greystones Roundabout – £40m

    Contribution to the Elwick bypass – £5m
