Flames leap from bin lorry ‘completely destroyed’ by fire on Wrexham street

Wrexham’s recycling efforts suffered a setback when a bin lorry was destroyed in a dramatic fire in a residential area. The vehicle was doing its rounds in Bath Road, in the city’s Pen-y-Bryn area, when it was engulfed by flames.

Fire broke out in the cab and smoke could be seen billowing from windows. Firefighters who tackled the blaze said the vehicle’s occupants had "safety evacuated" by the time they arrived.

A fire engine from Wrexham[1] was dispatched to tackle the blaze on Friday morning (January 12). By the time the flames were doused, the DAF recycling truck was “completely destroyed”.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service[4] was called to the incident at 10.34am on Friday. Investigations identified an electrical fault.

A spokesperson said: “Two hose reels were deployed and a breathing apparatus was used, along with a thermal imaging camera. Stop time for the incident was 11.10am.

“The vehicle suffered 100% fire damage - it was completely destroyed. The cause was established as an electrical fault in the cab dashboard.”

In 2019, Wrexham Council[6] procured nine new Mercedes refuse vehicles as part of efforts to provide a more “modern, reliable and efficient waste collection service".
