Driver ‘seriously injured’ in A1 lorry crash that shut road for several hours

A driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash that closed the A1 for several hours. They had been involved in a collision between a car and a lorry on the busy road, near Colsterworth[1], at around 3pm on Friday, January 5.

The road was closed southbound for roughly five hours while crews of emergency services, including Lincolnshire Police[2] and the air ambulance, attended the scene. A spokesperson for the force said: “One person was reported to have suffered serious injuries and treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment.

“The road was closed while emergency services worked and the debris was cleared. The road was cleared shortly after 7pm.”

Motorists were told to avoid the area by police while the incident was dealt with. According to the traffic monitoring service Inrix, traffic between Grantham and Stamford was badly affected and there was congestion up until Great Pointon.

Eyewitnesses saw lengthy queues of lorries and cars between Wooslthorpe and Colsterworth. Google Maps’ traffic tracker reported that motorists were moving ‘very slowly’ along the otherwise busy stretch of road, though drivers heading northbound appeared to be unaffected.

The first lane reopened at around 6.20pm and it had fully reopened by 8pm.
