Death on railway confirmed by police as trains delayed and cancelled

Disruption is currently being experienced on the railway between Warrington and Liverpool due to an incident at Widnes station.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 10.45am this morning following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Sadly, British Transport Police has confirmed that a person was pronounced dead.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Widnes railway station at around 10.45am today, Friday, January 5, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

In a travel update, East Midlands Railway said: “Services are currently disrupted on our Norwich-Nottingham-Liverpool route due to a person being hit by a train at Widnes.

“Where possible, trains will divert between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street.”

National Rail said: “Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Liverpool Lime Street and Warrington Central, meaning all lines are blocked.

“As a result, trains between these stations may be cancelled or revised. Disruption is expected until 2.30pm.”

Passengers with Northern, East Midlands Railway or TransPennine Express may use tickets on each service provider due to the disruption.

Rail passengers are urged to check before travelling, with rail replacement services being arranged.
