Controversial Brigg rail timetable under review

Brigg[1]‘s controversial rail[2] timetable is under review by the government.

Brigg Train Station had a Saturday-only service since 1993. It was changed last summer to a Monday to Friday service.

But rail users and residents called the change “absolutely dreadful”[3], because the new timetable leaves barely three hours to spend in the town before having to leave. A government minister confirmed before Christmas the review of the new timetable.

The new service departs each weekday at 9.54am from Sheffield and arrives into Brigg at 11.07am, before finishing its journey in Cleethorpes[4] at 11.44am. The same service then leaves Cleethorpes at 1.20pm and arrives into Brigg at 1.49pm. “Rail industry cost challenges” were cited as the reason behind the timetable change by a Northern Trains representative.

Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers[5] asked Rail Minister Huw Merriman to “look into this matter” and contact him after speaking with Northern Trains. He highlighted how the timetables gave Brigg people “only an hour and a half to enjoy the shopping in Grimsby or the excellent resort of Cleethorpes”.

“Yes, I will do so,” promised Mr Merriman. “We have discussed that service before and are looking at a timetable alteration for the future.”
