Busiest stations in Waltham Forest revealed

Over 15 million journeys were made in the borough’s nine railway stations in 2022/23

Walthamstow Central kept its crown as the busiest railway station in the borough last year, beating its closest competitor, Highams Park, by a million.

According to data released by the government’s Office for Rail and Road, 3.4 million people entered and exited the station’s Overground platforms in the 2022-23 financial year. Only railway stations were included in the statistics, as Transport for London (TfL) releases its own statistics on tube entries and exits. 

London Overground station Highams Park had 2.25m entries and exits over the same period, while 1.9m was the recorded figure at the third-most visited station, Blackhorse Road.

Rounding out the top five busiest local stations were Chingford (1.7m), and Wood Street (1.61m). 

In sixth, seventh, and eighth place were St James Street (1.25m), Leyton Midland Road (1.19m) and Leytonstone High Road (841,032). The least used station in the borough was Lea Bridge, with 617,244 entries and exits.

A total of 15.57m entries and exits were made in Waltham Forest’s nine railway stations in 2022/23 which is an increase on the 13.17m recorded in 2021/22, but is below the 16.55m recorded in 2019/20.

The wider statistics also revealed that there were a total of 2.5 billion entries and exits across Great Britain in 2022-23, which marks a significant increase from the 1.8 billion recorded the year before but remains below the pre-pandemic peak of 3 billion registered in 2019-20.
