Belgrave Middleway crash update after three car smash sparks rush hour traffic chaos
Police are trying to trace four men who fled the scene of a city centre crash. Travel chaos was sparked at rush hour as three cars collided on a major route through Birmingham.
Drivers were stuck in long delays as emergency services blocked Belgrave Middleway in both directions from 5pm on Thursday evening (Jan 11). Two women were found injured at the scene, near to Spring Road and Lee Bank Middleway.
West Midlands Police[1] has launched an appeal for dashcam footage after four men made off from one of the cars. Enquiries are ongoing to find out what happened, the force said.
"Several people were injured in a multiple car collision at the junction of Spring Street and Lee Bank Middleway[3] just after 5pm yesterday," a spokeswoman for the force said. "Fortunately none of the injured are thought to be in a life threatening condition.
"Four men made off from one of the cars and enquiries are on-going to establish what happened. If anyone has information or dash cam footage please contact us quoting log 3508 of 11 Jan."
The women were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for injuries not believed to be serious. A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service[4] added: "We were called to reports of a three-car RTC at the junction of Belgrave Middleway and Bristol Road at 5.11pm.
"Three ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. On arrival we discovered two patients, both women. They were treated for injuries not believed to be serious, before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital[5], Birmingham."
Dramatic pictures and video captured hundreds of motorists stuck in 'long delays' as the Belgrave Middleway was shut both ways. Congestion backed up to the Spring Hill roundabout for traffic heading Eastbound and back to Haden Circus for traffic heading Westbound.
Surrounding routes are also congested including the A441 Pershore Road and the A435 Haden Way. Around 8pm, traffic had resumed 'usual' levels.
