Which junction of M5 closed in Devon: diversion route

The crash has happened on the southbound carriageway in Devon, with a lorry currently on its side.

Thankfully no serious injuries have been reported, according to Devon and Cornwall Police.

However, all three lanes of the motorway are currently closed, between J28 (Cullompton) and J29 (Exeter) southbound. It is the final junction before heading off the motorway onto the A30.

Police and National Highways officers are at the scene, with the road closure extended to allow traffic to be turned around.

Devon and Cornwall Police Roads Policing Team have said: “All three lanes plus the hard shoulder blocked.

“Please avoid the area until further notice. No serious injuries reported.”

National Highways South West has warned people to allow extra time for their journey this morning.

Those stuck in the queue should stay in their vehicles and wait to be turned around.

A spokesperson said: “Traffic caught within the M5 south closure between J28 and J29 will be turned around and released via the rear of the queue.

“Please remain in your vehicle and await instructions from traffic officers or police. Please be aware it will take some time to release all traffic.”

A diversion is in place for motorists yet to join the queue.

Diversion Route

Road users are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M5 southbound at J28 and turn right at the traffic light controlled junction to join the A373
  • At the roundabout, head straight over and join the B3181 (Station Road)
  • Continue southbound on the B3181, passing through Cullompton, Westcott, Budlake (running parallel to the M5) and Broadclyst until the junction with Cumberland Way
  • Join Cumberland Way southbound and then at the next roundabout continue straight over onto Moor Lane
  • Continue southbound to then re-join the M5 at J30

A National Highways spokesperson added: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
