UK weather warnings issued as Brits to be battered by wind over Christmas
High winds are set to batter Britain this Christmas bringing disruption to travel and transport in parts of the country, forecasters have warned.
The Met Office[1] has issued yellow weather[2] warnings for Scotland[3], parts of eastern England and areas of Wales with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected.
The Met Office warning covers all of central and northern Scotland with warnings in force from nood today (December 24) until midnight. The forecasters said and existing warning for the north of the country had been extended to cover much of Central and Southern Scotland. “As confidence grows the warning impact level has also been changed to High Likelihood of Low Impact and the end time brought forward to the end of Sunday,” they added.
Some bus and train services will likely be affected, with some journeys taking longer the Met office warned, with some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected. There are also likely to be delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges. Some short term loss of power and other services was also possible in the area. Coastal areas like sea fronts and coastal communities were warned to watch out for spray and large waves.
A second yellow warning for the north east of the UK, from Scotland down as far as Hull, and inland as far as Derby is in force from 8am until 10pm today. People in these areas are warned that, “Strong, very gusty winds may again cause some travel disruption during Sunday, Christmas[4] Eve,” the Met Office said.

Forecastars warend of the chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, and some branches and trees may be damaged or brought down. Residents were also warned of the possibility of power cuts meanwhile travellers may have to contend with longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected, while a few roads and bridges could close. There were also warnings that flying debris could injure people in the area.
In Wales the yellow warning for rain stretches from 10pm on Saturday to 6pm today with “persistent and at times heavy rain” bringing to the region disruption. People inside the warning area, which covers the west of the country from Bangor as far south as Bridgend, could see flooding of homes and businesses with disruption to power supplies and other services also possible the Met Office warned.
