Two people have died after a train collided with a truck on a major highway connecting NSW[2] and South Australia[3] with motorists facing lengthy travel delays.

South Australian police responded to reports of a serious crash on the Barrier Highway at Bindarrah near the NSW border about 10.30am on Sunday.

The road was closed in both directions and would be for some time, police said.

Rail company Pacific National confirmed in a statement two employees had died.

‘It is with great sadness Pacific National confirms the death of two of our Port Augusta train crew following a serious incident where our locomotive collided with a truck at a crossing in Bindarrah in South Australia, near the New South Wales border,’ the statement said.

‘Pacific National takes the safety of its employees very seriously and has notified regulators who are investigating.’

Pacific National explained in its statement that police had launched an investigation.

‘This incident is having a profound impact across the organisation, and our first priority is to ensure the highest level of care to the families of our drivers who have tragically died,’ it read.

Motorists coming from NSW will not be able to travel past Broken Hill on the Barrier Highway into SA.

Motorists travelling east will not be able to travel past the Petersburg Road – Peterborough turn-off, about 220km from the border.

NSW authorities said if people needed to travel they could take the Silver City and the Sturt highways instead but that would add at least two hours to the journey.
