Somerset flooding live warnings and alerts as trains cancelled and roads closed

Serious flooding is expected across parts of Somerset[1] today and people in low-lying areas and near watercourses have been warned to be prepared. The Environment Agency currently has a number of flood warnings and alerts in place in and around Somerset and we will keep you updated with the latest risks to property and the road network[2] in our live blog below.

There are flood warnings for the River Brue, Glastonbury Millstream and the River Parrett. Flood alerts include the Mid Bristol Avon area, the River Chew, the River Biss and West Somerset Streams and rivers in south-east Somerset.

National Rail has warned of ‘major disruption’ to train services running in and our on Somerset due to flooded train tracks at Taunton. Journeys may be extended, delayed or cancelled until later this afternoon, the company has said.

There is a genuine risk to people’s property when a flood warning is in place. It means that flooding is expected and that people should act now to move vehicles to higher ground, more family and pets to safety, move important items upstairs and put flood barriers and air-brick covers in place. The Environment Agency also advises people in areas covered by flood warnings to turn off gas, electricity and water supplies. Those in flood alert areas should prepare a bag, including medicine and insurance documents, and keep checking flood warnings.
