Road closures in Wales due to Storm Fergus

Wet and windy weather has been affecting much of the UK on Sunday, with widespread disruption caused by a low pressure named by Irish forecasting service Met Éireann as Storm Fergus. It came less than a day after Storm Elin brought winds as high as 81mph to Wales.

Traffic Wales warned on Sunday of “poor driving conditions” along the majority of the M4 in south Wales and this played out throughout the day with speed restrictions put in place and bridges – the A477 Cleddau Bridge and M48 bridge between J1 and J2 – closed. The bridge remained closed on Sunday night.

As of Sunday at 10.30pm, Natural Resources Wales had seven flood alerts in place. Flood warnings and alerts had been issued earlier in the day. On Saturday, the railway line between Bridgend and Rhoose was flooded as the country saw high winds and heavy rain.

The Met Office says weather will be drier by dawn on Monday, with winds easing and most places most places being dry with sunny spells and lighter winds. Chief meteorologist Andy Page said: “Storm Fergus will conclude what has been an unsettled weekend of weather for the UK. Fergus will bring some strong winds and heavy rain for a time late on Sunday and into the early hours of Monday morning.”
