Pictures show aftermath of A3 crash as police say BMW driver ‘lucky to be alive’
The driver sustained no injuries in the horrific crash where the car came off the road
A BMW driver is “lucky to be alive”after coming off the A3 in Esher, police said. The vehicle was wrecked after landing in the verge, and had to be lifted from the bank by the side of the slip road.
Amazingly, despite the very smashed up car, the driver came away with no injuries after the incident[1] on Tuesday, December 21. The vehicle was a BMW 335D, which looked very different after it had been pulled out of the undergrowth.
Photos show the car hidden by bushes and brambles, with specialist road traffic[2] officers inspecting the damage. The top and cockpit of the car is barely visible, with windows smashed and airbags deployed.
Recovery workers attached a tow line to the car so it could be brought up out of the verge and onto the side of the road[3], by a special lorry. It was then placed on the back of the lorry, and removed from the scene. The road had to be closed southbound between the A309 Chessington and A244, Esher.
Surrey’s Roads Policing Unit said via Twitter: “The A3 Esher off slip SB is currently closed due to this RTC, the driver is has blown double the drink drive limit at the roadside and is lucky to be alive! For those guessing what the car was, BMW 335D. Here's a further stark reminder of why drink driving kills, amazing this driver had NO injuries.”
