Motorists facing rush-hour gridlock as two key roads dug up

Motorists are facing more rush-hour delays on two key city roads this afternoon – after both routes were dug up at the same time. Drivers say they are being left with little choice but to sit in the queues with temporary lights now up on Leek Road, through Abbey Hulton, and on Leek New Road at the turn-off for Norton Heights.

StokeonTrentLive has previously reported[1] how the scheme on the A53 is for emergency gas works being overseen by Cadent. Bosses say that project represents a ‘complex repair’ with no end date yet confirmed. As of Friday (December 8) they were still running.

The works on Leek New Road have seen queues go all the way back into Baddeley Green[2] and through Sneyd Green[3] during rush-hour. Motorists looking to avoid that by using Leek Road through Abbey Hulton[4] are faced with hefty queues there too.

Three-way lights have gone up in Abbey Hulton

That project – which started yesterday – has seen three-way lights go up at the junction with Abbots Road. According to One Network the Severn Trent Water works could go on until December 11.

Along with rush-hour gridlock the two lots of works on the two key routes, which run parallel to each other, will no doubt impact on weekend Christmas shoppers and football fans heading to the bet365 Stadium from the north of the city and the Moorlands.

Fed-up drivers around Milton and Baddeley Green have voiced their annoyance on social media. Some residents quipped whether buying something like a helicopter is the only way of currently getting around that end of the Potteries.
