Met Office sounds weather warning as ‘strong and gusty winds’ hit Teesside
A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office as strong gusts hit Teesside.
Forecasters predict gusts of wind will reach 36mph in Middlesbrough[1] while it's expected to be worse along the coastline. Wind speeds in Redcar[2] are forecast to reach 43mph on Sunday morning.
The weather[3] warning, which was issued on Sunday morning, will run from 9am until 6pm later in the day. Teessiders have been told to expect possible delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.
It's also likely that some bus and train services will be affected, with some journey's taking longer. The weather warning will impact much of the North East including Middlesbrough, Stockton[4], Darlington[5], Redcar and Cleveland, and Hartlepool[6].
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "West to west-south westerly winds will continue to gust above 50 mph until this evening, with a few exposed areas seeing gusts of 55-65 mph. Some marked crosswinds are likely on some roads, for instance the A1M. Some disruption to travel, as well as infrastructure is likely. Winds will ease from the north this evening."
It's expected to remain fairly mild following the freezing spell at the start of the month. There will be highs of 11°C in on Teesside on Sunday. But the strong breeze will mean it feels cooler - at around 8°C.
It's expected to remain cloudy throughout the day and into Monday. But the sunshine is set to emerge again on Tuesday although it will turn a bit cooler at 8°C.
Here's what the Met Office are telling Teessiders to expect:
- Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
- Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
- Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
- Some short term loss of power and other services is possible, including damage from tree debris
