Man in his 70s dies after van crashes into fence in Kegworth

A man has died after a van he was driving crashed into a fence in Kegworth in the early hours of today. Emergency services were called to Station Road in the village at around 4.45am.

The man, in his 70s, had to be extricated from the van, a spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service[1] said. Leicestershire Police[2] said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed he had suffered a medical episode. The force said no other passengers are believed to have been in the vehicle and no other injuries have been reported. It is understood minor damage was caused to a parked car in the incident.

The man’s family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers, police said. His death is not the only tragedy today as emergency services were called to an incident in the city, in Troon Way,[4] where a man inside a parked van is also believed to have suffered a medical episode.

Leicestershire Police was called to the scene at 10.28am where the man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead. His death is not believed to be suspicious and a file is being prepared for HM coroner. Meanwhile, inquiries are ongoing to establish the full details of the incident Kegwoth, the force said.

Sergeant Joel Tarplin said: “A man has sadly died following this collision and officers are providing support to his family. The incident happened early this morning.

“If you were in the area at this time, please think back to anything you may have seen and get in touch with us if you have any information.,” said a police spokesperson. “If you have any dashcam footage from the area, please also make contact with us.”
